Pen Y Fan in the Snow

Hiking up Pen Y Fan in the snow is an exhilarating adventure that takes you to the highest peak in South Wales. Located in the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park, this iconic mountain offers breathtaking views and a challenging yet rewarding climb.
Navigating through snowy terrain adds an extra level of adventure and excitement to the hike, making it an unforgettable journey.
With it being the third biggest summit in Wales, there’s an estimated 350,000 people who visit this place every year. So it’s not surprising that the National Trust is currently investing in the future amenities for Adventurers like us.
If you’re looking for a challenge, then check out the Welsh Three Peaks challenge which includes walking up the three biggest mountains in Wales – Snowdon, Cadir Idris and Pen Y Fan in 24 hours.

1. What we did?

We hiked the most popular Pont ar Daf route. With our Apple Watches on we did a distance of 4.36 miles and it took us 2 hours and 40 minutes with some stops to take pictures and play in the snow.

2. What to expect

As you start the hike, you’ll notice the trail is a mix of ice and water. And whilst the trail isn’t a glorious sight to see, the surrounding landscape is, which has transformed into a winter wonderland.
The snowy conditions require careful attention to your footing, as the path can be slippery and uneven. It’s important to wear appropriate footwear with good traction and consider using trekking poles for added stability.

As you ascend, the terrain gradually becomes steeper, and the challenge gets harder. This can be more physically demanding in snowy conditions, as you have to navigate through deeper snow and face stronger winds. But, the effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views at every turn, with the surrounding peaks and valleys covered in a soft white blanket as far as the eye can see.

At the summit of Pen Y Fan, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and awe as you take in the panoramic views. But, due to the extremely cold temperature, it’s only time for a quick picture or two then time to head back down.
Descending Pen Y Fan in the snow can be just as exhilarating as the ascent. You’ll have a new perspective on the snowy landscape and can enjoy different views. However, it’s important to exercise caution and ensure you have proper control to avoid any accidents.
Hiking up Pen Y Fan in the snow is a truly special experience that showcases the beauty and power of nature in winter. It’s a chance to embrace the elements, challenge yourself, and create lasting memories. So, if you’re up for an adventure, grab your warmest gear, pack your hiking essentials, and embark on a snowy journey up Pen Y Fan.

3. Tips

Here are our tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable hike in snowy conditions:
1. Join a Facebook group called “Walking in Wales” which should have all the information you need. It will also give you a space to ask questions if you’re unsure.
2. Check the weather conditions: Before heading out, check the weather forecast and be aware of any snowfall or adverse weather conditions.
3. Dress appropriately and ensure good walking boots.
4. Use trekking poles if needed: We didn’t require them, but if you want to ensure stability and balance then we’d advise as the trail is very slippery.
5. Plan your route: If it is your first time hiking up Pen Y Fan, then we would advise hiking the popular Pont Yr Daf route.
6. Stay hydrated and nourished: Even in cold weather, it’s important to stay hydrated and fuel your body. Pack plenty of water and high-energy snacks to keep your energy levels up throughout the hike.
7. Be cautious on steep sections: Snowy slopes can be slippery. Take extra caution and consider using your trekking poles. When descending you could also walk on the side grassed area which is full of fluffy snow instead of ice. Descend slowly and carefully, using a zigzag pattern to maintain control.
8. Stay visible: In low visibility conditions, such as heavy snowfall or fog, it’s crucial to stay visible to others. Wear bright-colored clothing or use reflective gear to ensure that you are easily seen by fellow hikers or rescue teams if needed.
9. Hike with a buddy: It’s always recommended to hike with a companion, especially in snowy conditions. Having someone with you can provide additional safety, support, and assistance if needed.
Remember, hiking in snowy conditions can be more challenging and demanding than in other seasons.

What's coming up?

The National Trust started developing the Pont ar Daf car park in 2022 to improve the welcoming of visitors. It’s a good sign for the area as it is in definite need for more car parking spaces and good toilets. However, with this comes a small price, a £7.50 charge per car for the day to be put in place once the work is completed.
